Those financial penalties are not
necessarily by way of fines; they are by way of important penalties associated with its debt-ridden situation. Those are for
Nicheliving to resolve. This agreement does not absolve it of its financial obligations to others in the community or to the Australian Taxation Office—or
anyone else for that matter. This agreement helps
these people to access homes. For the information of members assembled, I provide
some of the feedback from customers as a result of this action that we
have taken and the leadership that we have shown. Comments include —
I
would like to express my sincere thanks for your recent update regarding our
home build with Nicheliving. The resolution reached by the Cook
government brings much relief to my family and me. We are deeply grateful for the efforts made to ensure we can now
access our home indemnity insurance and move forward with our build.
This person goes on to say —
Thank
you once again to you and the Cook government for prioritising the interests of
homeowners like us.
Another says —
Thank you for helping us to sort this
issue. We are grateful to you and the Premier, WA for standing with us in our
life struggles. This has given my husband immense joy in the midst of his
cancer journey. We look forward to living in peace.
Finally —
Many thanks for the updates on the
Nicheliving situation I think commonsense has prevailed and we must all move
on and complete our homes.
This is an important opportunity for us to acknowledge the
great work of the Minister for Commerce in bringing this saga to a head and
making sure these people can access the home indemnity insurance scheme
literally months or years ahead of when they would have been able to if we had
allowed the State Administrative Tribunal appeals process to trickle on.
Through intervention and leadership and through a commitment to these particular
customers, we have brought this together as a speedy resolution.
Point of Order
Mr
P.J. RUNDLE : The Premier pointed
in his original answer to financial penalties that were being put on the
company.
The SPEAKER : Sorry; which
standing order are you referring to?
Mr P.J. RUNDLE : I was
pointing out that the Premier is misleading the house.
Several members interjected.
The SPEAKER : No, sorry.
Resume your seat.
Questions without Notice Resumed
The SPEAKER : Premier, I think
you had concluded—have you?
Mr R.H. COOK : I was going to
conclude, but as the member took such a spurious point of order, I would love
to speak at length about the importance of this decision. But I will spare the
Assembly further dialogue on this and resume my seat.
The SPEAKER : Excellent—because
it is a supplementary answer. Thank you!
