❓ A parliamentary question addresses potential staff reductions in country hospitals due to shared service arrangements and seeks assurances that savings will be reinvested in rural health services. The Minister's response is non-committal regarding specific numbers and reinvestment location.

I refer to the minister’s recent admission in answer to a question on notice in the Legislative Council of 23 June 2004, answered on 17 August 2004, that new shared service arrangements for hospital administration will result in a reduction of staff in country hospitals. (1) How many staff will be lost from country hospitals because of these arrangements and what is the estimated savings for country health services? (2) Will all savings from lost country positions be reinvested in front-line health services for country hospitals? (3) Do any country hospitals or country health services have a reduced budget allocation for 2004-05; that is, this current allocation period? (4) If yes to (3), which ones, and will there be any staff losses? Mr J.A. McGINTY

I thank the Leader of the National Party for some notice of this question, which has enabled me to obtain a detailed response. Unfortunately in one sense the question is a little premature and I will explain why. (1) In future some human resource functions currently performed at country hospitals will be performed at the Health Corporate Network shared service centre in Perth. All corporate functions that require face-to-face delivery will remain at country hospitals. It is not possible to determine the number of positions affected by the transfer of functions at this stage, as consultation and assessment related to this matter is currently in progress. Current corporate staff who do not continue in a corporate role in a country hospital will be offered suitable redeployment, which will assist in maintaining employment in country locations. (2) Any savings from corporate reform will be reinvested in health service delivery. Mr M.W. Trenorden: Country health service delivery or just health service delivery? Mr J.A. McGINTY: At this stage it is health service delivery. I cannot be more specific as we have not been able to quantify it. (3) No. (4) Not applicable.
