Barnett questions Beazley's tax promise credibility, referencing Gallop's broken promise. Gallop deflects, attacking the Liberal/National parties' financial dishonesty and promoting a Labor partnership for WA's health, aged care and education.

FEDERAL ALP, TAX PROMISES
I refer to Kim Beazley’s now familiar promise during federal Labor’s campaign launch that it will go to this election with no proposals for new taxes and no proposals to raise taxes. Given that the Premier made the same promise not to increase taxes and charges before the state election and then broke his promise immediately after the election, why should the people of Western Australia trust Kim Beazley on his commitment not to increase taxes? Dr GALLOP

I would not want to use this opportunity to play politics! I recall that a promise about taxes was made before the last federal election. I also recall that a tax on superannuation was introduced after that election. I hope that the figures put out by the Howard Government, upon which Mr Beazley is making his promise that there will be no requirement for extra taxes after he wins government, are better than the figures put out by the coalition Government before the Western Australian election. I hope that the figures put out by Mr Howard have some credibility. When we came to government, the dishonesty of the Liberal and National Parties in Western Australia was exposed. They put out figures during the election campaign that they knew were false. Immediately we were informed of the falsehood of those figures, the Treasurer came into the Parliament and indicated to the people of Western Australia the true state of affairs, and we made a correction. We are in the last week of a federal election campaign. I ask one simple question: which party is offering a partnership with the Government of Western Australia to improve its health, aged care and education systems? Only one party is offering that partnership with the Government of Western Australia - the Kim Beazley-led Labor Party. It is in the interests of the people of Western Australia that the Government in Canberra understand the problems facing those people, and that the goods and services tax be simplified and subjected to a rollback so that some of the pressures on Western Australian working families and small businesses are removed. I thank the Leader of the Opposition for giving me the opportunity to tell the people of Western Australia that if they have the interests of Western Australia at heart, they should vote for Kim Beazley on Saturday.
