The Royal Flora Ratchaphruek 2006 is a series of national and international events, many of which have no direct relevance to BGPA activities. There are three specific events at the Royal Flora Ratchaphruek 2006 that the BGPA might have been interested in attending. The first relevant event is the International Gardens Exposition, to be held from 1 November 2006 - 31 January 2007. Over 30 participants will each deliver a floricultural display on a 500m 2 site promoting their country. The second potential event for BGPA participation is the International HortiAsia Exhibition from 11-14 January 2007. This Exhibition is geared to the demonstration and sale of products and services, especially for the exotic (non Australian) ornamental plant industry. The third relevant event is the International Workshop on Ornamental Plants, and a one day pre-workshop tour from 10-14 January 2007. The tour and workshop will focus on exotic flower crops such as chrysanthemums, roses, gerberas and exotic orchids. The BGPA has an international reputation in the horticulture and science of Australian plants, and its staff are invited on a weekly basis to a range of national and international workshops and conferences. Attendance at these events by the BGPA is kept to a minimum, and the related cost and benefit to Western Australia determined on a case by case basis. For the Royal Flora Ratchaphruek 2006, it was considered that the cost for the BGPA to participate in the International Gardens Exposition was about $300,000, and would have been difficult to undertake due to various logistical and climatic issues. Participation in the other two events would have cost about $7,500. It was considered that the overall benefit to Western Australia for the BGPA to participate in these events was low.
