TIER 3
RAIL LINES
1127. Hon DARREN WEST to the
parliamentary secretary representing the Minister for Transport:
I refer to question without notice 895 regarding the safety
inspections of the tier 3 rail lines.
(1) When was the review completed?
(2) Has the government now considered the findings in the
report?
(3) If yes to (2), will the minister table a copy of the
report?
(4) If no to (2), when will the government consider the
findings in the report?

I thank the honourable member for some notice of this
question.
(1) The review of the tier 3 rail lines was completed in
August 2014.
(2) Yes.
(3) No.
However, the Minister for Transport is able to confirm that the majority of the
tier 3 rail lines are considered not to be in a fit-for-purpose condition and
are deemed unsafe for the running of trains in accordance with the code of
practice. The Narrogin–Yilliminning section is considered safe in its
current condition; however, there are no grain bins on this section of line for
the transportation of grain by rail. A significant amount of investment is
required for each of the tier 3 rail lines to make them fit for purpose.
(4) Not applicable.
