PILBARA DESALINATION PLANT — ENERGY CONSUMPTION
I refer to cabinet’s decision to build a new desalination plant in the west Pilbara. (1) Will the minister detail the anticipated energy consumption required for the state government’s desalination unit that has been approved for construction on the Burrup Peninsula in the Pilbara? (2) Is there available sufficient excess power generation in the Pilbara to meet the energy needs of the proposed new desalination unit? (3) Has Horizon Power granted approval for the Water Corporation to access supply of energy for this desalination unit; and, if yes, at what cost and under what conditions? (4) What will be the capital cost to the state government of any necessary expansion of the power generation capacity of the Pilbara to meet the power needs of the desalination unit approved for the Burrup? Hon PETER COLLIER

I thank the honourable member for some notice of the question. (1) This question should be referred to the office of the Minister for Water. (2)–(4) Horizon Power is working to ensure that it meets the forecast generation demand for the Pilbara by securing firm capacity through agreements with third parties and investigating the feasibility of a new power station at Port Hedland.
