I refer to a question on notice I asked on Thursday, 4 March 2004, in answer to which the minister stated that the report entitled “Buffer and Odour Assessment - Proposed West Martin Residential Project” indicated that a portion of Lumen Christi College and some residents are in a zone that can expect four to six exceedances of the PM10 standard each year from quarry activities. (1) Has Lumen Christi College been advised that dust from the quarry has potential health risks for students and staff? (2) Were the proponents of the college advised of the health risk when planning approval was given for construction of the school? (3) Has the college been advised to relocate? (4) If yes, will the Government assist the college to relocate? Hon TOM STEPHENS

The Minister for the Environment has provided the following response - (1) Yes. The Department of Environmental Protection has informed the college about the issue and will continue to do so. (2) Questions regarding specific advice given to the college at the time of planning approval should be directed to the City of Gosnells. (3) No. The study in question was not conclusive and the possible health risks are low. A more comprehensive study is expected to commence soon. If this study reveals breaches of the national environmental protection measure for fine dust, the quarry will be required to modify its operation. (4) Not applicable.
