The data below is as reported to the Council of Australian Governments (COAG). Accordingly, the COAG definitions for serious assault and assault are as follows:
a serious assault includes all acts of sexual assault and is an act of physical violence, which results in actual bodily harm which:
requires medical treatment and assessment by a medical officer resulting in overnight hospitalisation in a medical facility (eg. clinic/infirmary/hospital or a public hospital);
requires extended periods of ongoing medical treatment
an assault is an act of physical violence or a physical injury detected which may or may not require short-term medical intervention of a non-hospitalised nature.
Since 2002/03 the accuracy of the data entered has been checked and verified to ensure the definition for a serious assault versus assault have been adhered to. Therefore, data entered prior to this time is not as reliable with regard to the seriousness of the assault.
