TEACHERS - ADVERTISING CAMPAIGN
I draw the minister’s attention to this advertisement, which is obviously glossy. It shows a teacher next to a flash BMW convertible motor car. This advertisement is being used in the eastern states of Australia in an attempt to attract teachers to Western Australia. It shows a teacher leaning against a $130 000 BMW convertible car. Several members interjected. The SPEAKER : Order! Mr J.H.D. DAY : Given that this teacher bought the car with money he made while he worked as a robotics engineer in Ireland, could the minister explain why he has authorised this disingenuous depiction of a teacher’s life here in Western Australia? Mr M. McGOWAN

Can I look at the ad? Mr J.H.D. Day : No; you’ve seen it; you know it. Mr M. McGOWAN : I cannot recall the exact details of this teacher. The government has started an advertising campaign in the eastern states to try to attract teachers to Western Australia. Mr J.H.D. Day : He is the deputy principal at the Leonora District High School. Mr M. McGOWAN : Give me the ad so that I can look at it. We started an advertising campaign in the eastern states to try to attract teachers to Western Australia. I am quite proud of that. It is actually quite unprecedented for a Minister for Education and Training to go over there to try to recruit teachers, because that minister is able to advertise better pay rates than other states for teachers who wish to come here and a huge, booming economy that offers job opportunities for family members. That is a great selling point, and if we use people who agree to be part of that advertising campaign and agree to have their cars photographed with them, so what? Do members opposite think that I go and select a teacher and put a car next to him? The man in the photograph agreed to be in an advertising campaign, and he showed that there are interesting and different people in our rural communities. This is an interesting person with a great life story, apparently, who is teaching in Western Australia. I am quite proud of our teaching workforce, and I am proud of that individual, if the facts about him, as outlined by the member for Darling Range, are correct.
