TECHNICAL
AND FURTHER EDUCATION — COURSE AND TRAINING OPTIONS
483. Mr F.M. LOGAN to the
Minister for Training and Workforce Development:
Mr Speaker —
Mr D.A. Templeman :
Don't stuff it up this time!
Mr F.M. LOGAN : In
order not to upset the sensibilities of the Speaker, I will frame the question
in the following way. I remind the minister of her statement to this house a
couple of weeks ago about the new courses offered by TAFE that will help create
jobs and drive economic change. I asked her which courses would be offered.
(1) Is the new
certificate III in tourism—onshore cruise operations—offered by
Central TAFE one of the new courses the minister was trying to think of?
(2) Will the
new jobs that the minister is referring to come out of the training partnership
between Central TAFE and Akorn Destination Management in the certificate III in
onshore cruise operations?
(3) Given that
this new course will require students to pay for the TAFE training whilst
undertaking unpaid work experience for Akorn, is this the future of the
government's Future Skills policy?

I feel quite chuffed that the member for Cockburn thinks I would have an
understanding of and be able to recite to this house the ins and outs of the
over 1 600 training courses that are available right across the state in all
our training colleges in Western Australia. If the member for Cockburn wants
the specifics of a particular course, he will need to put a question on notice.
We are prioritising effort in over 600 priority skills areas and over 500
apprenticeships and traineeships. We have 80 priority skills areas in Western
Australia that we know need a targeted effort. If the member wants to know
about a specific course and the ins and outs of its funding, he should write to
me or put a question on notice.
