Health—Radiation therapy services
174. Mr Basil Zempilas to the Premier:
Given that the Premier's
health minister has stated that the buck stops with the Premier when it comes
to health, will he today commit to providing the necessary funding for
radiation therapy so that patients living in the east and north metropolitan
regions will no longer be forced to choose between travelling every day to Sir
Charles Gairdner Hospital or seeking treatment locally, where they must pay?

No government in the
history of this state has done more to spread the opportunities around
radiation oncology than this government. I and the Minister for Health actually
opened the radiation oncology centre at Albany Health Campus. We continue to
look at opportunities to spread the availability of cancer services right
across this state.
I note from media
reports this morning that residents in the southern suburbs will have the
opportunity to access more radiation oncology services as well.
The message to those
opposite is that if you want to continue to see this ongoing spread and
deployment of cancer services, then continue to support a Labor government. We
are the ones—

Mr Roger Cook: As I said, Mr Speaker, it is particularly
empty today.
We continue to
deploy and grow our health infrastructure right across the state. In the
current pipeline, there is $3.8 billion of health infrastructure. Just this
morning, the day is only half through and I have already signed up $1.8 billion
for a new women's and babies' hospital at the Fiona Stanley Hospital site. Of
course there is also $451 million for Bunbury Hospital. I know the member for
Geraldton is delighted that we are providing $188 million for the redevelopment
of Geraldton Hospital. We were the ones who provided the first phase of that,
and it will include high-level radiation oncology services at Geraldton. We
continue to grow our hospital services right across the state, including the
Fitzroy Valley renal dialysis service; and the Peel Health Campus, a $152 million
service hospital, which will be delivered by the public for the public. There
are $284 million worth of upgrades at the Joondalup Health Campus, with over
200 new beds and a new ED. There will be a $64 million upgrade at Fremantle
Hospital to 40 new mental health beds; at Perth Children's Hospital, $21.9 million
for refurbishments of ward 5A; at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, a $50 million
redevelopment of the ED, ambulance triage and 10 new ICU beds. Karratha step up,
step down: $19.7 million for a six-bed mental health facility. At Laverton Hospital,
the ED, outpatients, mental health and drug and alcohol services. We are even
developing a new health hub at Byford Hospital.
No-one has seen such
a growth in hospital services as they have seen under the WA Labor government.
I want to echo the words of the Minister for Health, who says that our
priorities are jobs, health and housing, and we are delivering on all those
items.
