QuestionView source ↗
Yesterday, just after 4.30 pm, I asked a question of the minister through the parliamentary secretary about the Birnbrauer report and was told that the report was being finalised. (1) Was the parliamentary secretary aware that the report had been completed, the results had been given to the minister the previous day and the minister had made a statement in another place at 9.08 am yesterday? (2) If so, why did the parliamentary secretary give the answer he gave to the House yesterday? (3) If not, why was the parliamentary secretary not informed by the minister’s office that the minister was about to make this important statement? (4) What steps does the parliamentary secretary intend to take to rectify the matter? Hon GRAHAM GIFFARD

I thank the honourable member for the question. (1) I was not aware of that. (2) Not applicable. (3) Did the member ask what steps had been taken? Hon Simon O’Brien: Why were you not aware of it? Hon GRAHAM GIFFARD: Why was I not aware of it? I am not yet aware of why I was not aware. Hon Simon O’Brien: Don’t you have a responsibility? Hon GRAHAM GIFFARD: Listen to me. I am answering the question. Hon Simon O’Brien: You have a responsibility to ensure the information you give to this place is correct. Hon GRAHAM GIFFARD: Shut up and listen! Point of Order Hon PETER FOSS: This is a serious question that I would have thought - Hon Graham Giffard: And I am trying to answer it. Hon PETER FOSS: That response was inappropriate. It is a serious question that deserves to be answered. Several members interjected. The PRESIDENT: Order, members! Hon Peter Foss has a point of order. The interjections will cease. The parliamentary secretary was drowned out by interjections. Hon PETER FOSS: The point is that the matter raised is one of privilege, and it should be dealt with seriously. Questions without Notice Resumed Hon GRAHAM GIFFARD: I continue - (4) I will take up that matter with the minister’s office directly.
