1056. Hon Simon Ehrenfeld to the parliamentary
secretary representing the Minister for Health:
I refer to the
Premier's media release on 6 November regarding the Cook Labor government's
Building Hospitals Fund, including the acquisition of St John of God Mt Lawley
Hospital.
(1) Approximately how many new beds will be added
to the public system and how many will be lost from the private system as a
result of the acquisition of Mount Lawley private hospital?
(2) Is the government
intending to transfer existing private nurses, doctors and allied health staff
into the public system as part of this acquisition?
(3) What is the approximate break-up of the
announced $1.5 billion Building Hospitals Fund, showing how much will be spent
on:
(a) new hospitals planned to be built; and
(b) total purchase costs allocated to the Mount
Lawley hospital?

I thank the
honourable member for some notice of the question. The following answer has
been provided by the Minister for Health.
(1) The Mount Lawley hospital will operate as a
public hospital with approximately 200 beds, following a commissioning and
transition process. St John of God Health Care group has advised that it does
not anticipate any loss of private activity because of the sale.
(2) The St John of God Health Care group is
managing the transition of functions to St John of God Midland Public Hospital
and engaging with its current employees at the Mount Lawley private hospital on
opportunities and options.
(3) The $1.5 billion Building Hospitals Fund will
be drawn down as the government starts to develop the important hospital
projects, including Mount Lawley hospital, the Royal Perth Hospital
redevelopment and the new Peel Health Campus. The purchase costs of the Mount
Lawley hospital are subject to an ongoing negotiation process.
