ABORIGINAL HERITAGE
LEGISLATION AMENDMENT AND REPEAL BILL 2023 — TWO-BILL SPLIT
645. Mr R.S. LOVE to the Premier:
I refer to calls from the opposition
to split the Aboriginal Heritage Legislation Amendment and Repeal Bill 2023 to
ensure that the failed Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Act 2021 can be immediately
repealed. Given that this is the last chance the government has, will the
Premier do the commonsense thing and agree to split the bill?

I thank the member for the question.
Before I address the question, on behalf of the member for Fremantle, I acknowledge
the year 11 students from CBC Fremantle, whom I had the opportunity to meet
earlier today. G'day.
The opposition has raised this issue
on a number of occasions. We have made it quite clear that we will have the
opportunity to debate the bill today. In accordance with the opposition's
wishes, we made sure that the regulations for the bill were provided before the
debate. That was the opposition's initial request and I note that this
is a subsequent request. The opposition will have the opportunity to debate the
bill and, in that process, repeal the 2021 act and bring the 1972 act back to
life with simple and effective amendments.
