(a) From 1 to 23 March 2011 inclusive, there were 581 patients admitted from the elective surgery waiting list, after waiting longer that the clinically recommended time for their category of surgery.
(i) The 581 patients referred to in (a) had the following surgical specialities:
Orthopaedic Surgery: 123
General Surgery: 93
Urology: 87
Ear, Nose & Throat: 83
Plastic Surgery: 43
Ophthalmology: 37
Paediatric Surgery: 22
Cardiothoracic Surgery: 16
Vascular Surgery: 10
Endocrinology: 8
Cardiology: 7
Gastroenterology: 7
Neurosurgery: 7
Spinal Surgery: 7
Other: 31
(b) Of these long wait patients, 7 waited 710 days or more before they were admitted for their surgery. In the interest of patient confidentiality the longest time an individual waited for elective surgery is suppressed, the supplied range prevents the identification of an individual patient.
(c) As at 23 March 2011, the Department of Health paid for 66 patients to have surgery undertaken in a private hospital.
(i) Lens implant, bilateral strabismus, tarsal strip both eyes, hernia repair, fundoplication, excision of skin lesion, reconstruction of breast, total arthroplasty of knee/hip, shoulder repair, carpal tunnel, and lateral column procedure right elbow. For confidentiality reasons generic details of the procedures have been used.
(d) As at 23 March 2011, for 16 of the 66 patients there was no additional average cost. For 50 of the 66 public patients, additional costs were incurred due to their clinical needs. The average additional cost for each of these 50 patients was $2,347.81.
