SOUTH WEST METROPOLITAN RAILWAY, ATTITUDE OF SOUTH PERTH RESIDENTS
Has the minister received any recent indication of the attitude of South Perth residents towards the new, faster, environmentally clean route for the south west metropolitan railway? Ms MacTIERNAN

I thank the member for Perth, who is eagerly awaiting the opportunity to make these rapid trips to Rockingham, which we know will be the centre of the universe, and thereafter to have his weekends in Mandurah. Of recent times we have noticed in the local newspapers in South Perth that the residents have indicated, basically, that they are sick of the whingeing about this rail line. They see it as a positive for their community. We have had more substantial evidence of a great deal of support in South Perth for the rail line. Last week I met with the administrators and senior officials of the City of South Perth, who advised they had conducted an independent survey of local residents. They found a strong level of local support for a railway station in South Perth; in fact, the people were enthusiastic about a railway station in South Perth. I indicated that we were happy to weave into the master planning phase a station in South Perth, although it would not be funded within the first term of this project. Like a number of stations, this will come as part 2 of this important project. They also talked about the importance of and the enthusiasm for the Canning Bridge station for those communities in Como, Salter Point and Manning. We discussed the possibility of providing a Park 'n' Ride station there. They agreed to look at what land they might be able to make available for not only a bus interchange but also a possible Park 'n' Ride station. Apparently some concern had been raised that this project would involve taking extra land from the foreshore. We were able to assure them that we had no plans to take any extra land from the foreshore.
