831. Hon TJORN SIBMA to the parliamentary secretary
representing the Attorney General:
Who among my
happy friends opposite is answering questions from the Attorney General today?
Hon Jackie
Jarvis : Me.
Hon TJORN SIBMA : Thank
you, minister. I refer to work undertaken by the Department of Justice on a feasibility study that proposes to identify and prioritise any opportunities to increase
the number of criminal jury trial courtrooms, and identify the possibility of
building new facilities in response to the current and projected future
shortage of criminal trial courtrooms in the CBD.
(1) On how many
occasions over the past two years has the department met to undertake the
feasibility study and related work?
(2) With whom has
the department consulted in developing the feasibility study?
(3) When does the

I thank the honourable member for
some notice of the question. The following response has been provided by the
Attorney General.
(1)–(3) Multiple
discussions have taken place with the Department of Justice as the feasibility
study and related work has progressed. The Department of Justice's
court and tribunal services division has consulted internally in developing the
feasibility study for cabinet's consideration. This consultation has
involved internal departmental stakeholders, with input, as required, from the
respective courts. The Department of Justice is yet to advise the Attorney
General on a time frame for the finalisation of the feasibility study. This
work is ongoing.
