NATURE POSITIVE PLAN — IMPLEMENTATION
829. Mr R.S. LOVE to the Premier:
My question is to the Premier as
Premier; Minister for Federal–State Relations. I refer to the federal
Labor government's nature positive plan and the Premier's
comments reported in The Australian Financial Review on 29 October,
whereby he urged Prime Minister Albany to —
''Walk away from it at the
moment, go to the election, get clarity then get on with the job.''
(1) Has the
Premier directly lobbied the Prime Minister to delay these reforms until after
both the Western Australian state election on 8 March and the federal election
because he is worried that they will damage his chance of re-election?
(2) Has the
Premier made it clear to the Prime Minister that the nature positive plan could
devastate Western Australia's resources sector?

(1)–(2) I
think that the lobbying I made to the Prime Minister was the subject of the
article that the member just read out, so it should be apparent, even to him,
that, yes, I have spoken to the Prime Minister about the impact of some of the
concepts that were raised in the context of the debate around nature positive
laws and the impact they would have on Western Australian businesses. It is in
that context that we discussed the important role that Western Australia plays
in the national economy. We are the engine room of the national economy, and
that is the reason it is so important that Canberra is always aware of the
importance of Western Australia when it makes decisions, particularly decisions
that impact on businesses that are providing the wealth that this country is so
fortunate to have. We continue to engage with the government on a whole range
of issues. How it manages those issues is entirely up to it, but I will always
do what is right for WA and I will always stand up for WA.
