Synergy—Overcharging
492. Mr Basil Zempilas to
the Premier:
I have a
supplementary question. Is this not yet another example of the government's
inability to be transparent and accountable with the people of Western
Australia?

AnswerView source ↗

No, it is not. This
is an example of a government that takes responsibility for issues,
particularly issues that we inherited from the previous government. We ensured
that we got on top of it and reviewed it.
Several members
interjected.
The Speaker: Members of the opposition, the question
has been asked, and the Premier is responding. You do not have to like what he
says, but he has the right to respond in silence.
Mr Roger Cook: I commend the minister for the way she
has managed this particular issue to ensure that we were able to provide
accurate information on the issue. Of course, we are not happy with the
situation in relation to the actions and the oversight of the board of Synergy.
That is why it was important that the minister had independent advice to ensure
that we could instruct Synergy appropriately to provide the outcome that we are
now seeking. Not surprisingly, the minister is undertaking an appropriate
review of the actions of the board in this particular circumstance and ensuring
that Synergy can move forward in a way that continues to generate trust with
its customer base. I do not think any of us believe that this has not done
damage to the trust between Synergy and its customers. That is why it is so
important that the minister acted with the correct information and the
appropriate mechanisms to respond and then respond—
Mr Basil Zempilas interjected.
The Speaker: Leader of the Opposition.
Mr Roger Cook: —and thereby inform the public
about the full extent of the situation and how we would go about rectifying it.
