GENETICALLY MODIFIED COTTON CROPS — ORD RIVER
(1) Has the minister sought any advice or received any reports about the viability of growing genetically modified cotton, or cotton in general, as part of an expansion of irrigated agriculture in the Ord River area? (2) If yes to (1), has the minister now received any such advice or reports? (3) If yes to (2), will the minister now table the advice or reports received? (4) If no to (2), will the minister at least advise the house from whom such advice or reports have been received, and on what dates? (5) If no to (1), why not? (6) If no to (4), why not? I thank the member for some notice of this question. The minister has replied — (1) I have not sought any advice nor commissioned any report in regard to this matter. I was provided by the Department of Agriculture and Food with a copy of the report commissioned by the previous minister’s GMO Industry Reference Group, titled “GM Cotton in the Ord River Irrigation Area”, July 2007. (2)-(4) Not applicable. (5) It is a commercial decision whether GM cotton is grown in the ORIA. (6) Not applicable.
