(1) How does the Department of Agriculture justify the construction of expensive horse yards at Parkeston if the plan is to remove the Parkeston facility? (2) Will the Government consider the compulsory acquisition of the Parkeston yards so that they remain adjacent to the rail line? (3) If not, why not? Hon KIM CHANCE

I thank the member for some notice of this question. Again, I advise that it might be a little while before the member gets a written copy of the answer. (1) The new horse facilities are being constructed at Parkeston as an interim measure to provide safe inspection facilities for horses. These facilities are such that they can be removed and used in a new proposed inspection facility at South Boulder. (2)-(3) The Government is currently negotiating to acquire land at South Boulder for a new quarantine inspection facility. This site has a number of advantages because it is on the main road routes that carry the majority of livestock entering Western Australia. Rail transport of stock entering the State via Kalgoorlie is a small volume of the total. An alternative site to the Parkeston site is more appropriate.
