STATE
BUDGET — OPERATING SURPLUS
746. Mr B.S. WYATT to the
Premier:
I have a supplementary question. In light of the fact that
the Premier said that he is not going to lead a government that goes into
deficit, what consequences will there be beyond cuts to the Western Australia
taxpayer?

AnswerView source ↗

We will do all that we can to maintain a surplus. As I and
the Treasurer have said, it is going to be extremely difficult to do that this year
because of factors beyond the state government's control.
Mr B.S. Wyatt interjected.
The SPEAKER :
Member for Victoria Park, I have warned you twice now. I am going to let you
off this time. I do not want to hear this barrage all the time.
Mr C.J. BARNETT :
We are dealing with declining iron ore prices, and a decline in goods and
services tax in absolute dollar terms. They are factors beyond our control.
This is a good government. It has been a government of achievement for Western
Australia in every single portfolio area.
Mr M. McGowan interjected.
Mr C.J. BARNETT :
The Leader of the Opposition is displaying his immaturity.
