(1) (a) The latest mineral and petroleum exploration expenditure figures for Western Australia were released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics on 18 September 2002. For the 2001–02 financial year, mineral exploration expenditure in Western Australia totalled $376.4 million, whereas petroleum exploration expenditure was $479.8 million. (b) An earlier estimate by the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources of mineral exploration expenditure in Western Australia for calendar 2001 was a total of $440 million. (2) The figures clearly support the need for the Ministerial inquiry into Greenfields Exploration, as the 2001-02 expenditure is 47% lower than the peak in 1996-97 and 14% lower that 2000-01. Expenditure in the Greenfield Exploration component has experienced an even larger decline, while Brownfield has experienced a smaller decline.
