CHILDREN IN STATE CARE - MURRAY REPORT
I refer to the 57 children abused while in state care prior to 2006 and the Gwenn Murray report. (1) The report found that 69 per cent of those children have previously had six or more placements, seven children had more than nine placements and one had 23 previous placements. What is the department doing with the child who has had 23 placements? (2) Has this child now been placed in residential care? (3) In those 23 placements, has this child been abused in more than one home that the child has been in? (4) If yes, how many times has this child been abused and in how many homes? (5) How many of these 57 children have started legal proceedings against their perpetrators? Hon KATE DOUST

I thank the honourable member for some notice of this question. The Minister for Community Development has provided the following response - (1) The department has engaged a mentor to work with the child. This has allowed a medical health assessment and enabled the child to address substance abuse issues. The child currently resides with his sister and brother-in-law, and the department has provided ongoing support with this arrangement. The department has explored the possibility of engaging the child in practical life skills courses and courses in skills such as budgeting in preparation for independent living. In addition, the department is arranging Centrelink benefits, and the child has been provided with counselling, which will be ongoing. (2) No. (3) Yes. The child has been abused in more than one home. (4) The abuse occurred twice in different locations. (5) Three children have commenced legal proceedings.
