Will the Premier outline to the House the efforts made by the State Government to secure a share of the Gorgon gas royalties? Dr G.I. GALLOP

AnswerView source ↗

Mr Speaker, you would be aware that the State Government has been lobbying the Commonwealth Government for some time to ensure that a share of the royalties to be paid to the Commonwealth Government as a result of the Gorgon project are given back to Western Australia. We asked the Howard Government to share with the State some of those anticipated royalties. I have spoken with and written to John Howard on this subject. The answer from him was no, this money was not for the people of Western Australia. I took up this matter with the federal Opposition because clearly it is an important matter in Australia today. I am very pleased to say that the federal Labor Party under Mark Latham understands the needs of Western Australians. I am very pleased - Mr B.J. Grylls: Wait for the next question. Dr G.I. GALLOP: Does the member for Merredin agree that a portion of those royalties should be given to Western Australia? We tried to negotiate with John Howard and the federal Liberal Party, but they are not interested. However, I am very pleased that one person is interested: Mark Latham, the leader of the federal Labor Party. He announced that a portion of those royalties - up to $75 million every year over the 30 years of the project - would be given to Western Australia. That money would be used to develop the infrastructure of our all-important resource industries in this State. At last someone in Canberra is listening to the people of Western Australia. That person is Mark Latham and the political party is the Australian Labor Party. For many years we have tried to get the Commonwealth to understand the important demands that have been placed on infrastructure provision in Western Australia. John Howard said no. Mark Latham is listening. There is a real choice now in this federal election regarding the future of Western Australia. Under a federal Labor Government we will get support. Under a federal Liberal Government we are out of sight, out of mind. For the federal Liberals the great Australian continent ends at the Nullarbor Plain; everything west of that does not exist. I am very pleased that Mark Latham has agreed with the proposal that we have put to him. There is no doubt that he needs to be congratulated on that initiative. The people of Western Australia now know that they have a voice in Canberra in the Australian Labor Party. John Howard is neither listening to nor interested in Western Australia.
