(3) The Disability Services Commission does not provide funding to the Western Australian Disability Enterprises (WADES).
The Western Australian State Government, however, recognises the value of meaningful employment to all people, particularly those with a disability, and it was for this reason that the Premier announced a change to Western Australian Government procurement policy in late 2009, enabling Western Australian Disability Enterprises (WADEs) to obtain Government contracts without the need to go to tender, on the proviso that the standard criteria of fair value and quality standards were met.
To further increase the growth in Government contracts for WADEs, a grant of $457,000 over four years was established to fund the position of an Executive Officer to progress the WADE employment initiative. This position is hosted by Good Samaritan Industries (GSI) but represents all WADEs. The grant is administered by the Disability Services Commission.
The position liaises with WADEs, Government (State and Local) and the private sector to maximise opportunities for increasing the availability of Government and private sector work to WADEs; thereby improving the amount and quality of work available to people with disability.
The Department of Finance promotes the WADE initiative through a specific section on its website. State Government agencies are encouraged to contact the ADE Procurement team for information and assistance.
