ROYAL PERTH REHABILITATION HOSPITAL–FIONA
STANLEY HOSPITAL — TRANSFERS
708. Ms A.R. MITCHELL to the Minister for
Health:
I refer to the
transfer of patients from Royal Perth Rehabilitation Hospital in Shenton Park to the new facilities at the
flagship Fiona Stanley Hospital. Can the minister please outline to the house
what will be involved in transferring those patients in the coming weeks?

AnswerView source ↗

I thank the member
for that question, which is a good opportunity to update the house on what will
happen with the transfer of patients from Royal Perth Rehabilitation
Hospital in Shenton Park, which as
members know is closing down, to Fiona Stanley Hospital. We will be opening the
hospital on 3 October and patients will be transferred on Saturday, 4 October.
It will be the single biggest transfer of patients ever undertaken in Western Australia.
The patients will be accompanied throughout the transfer journey and their
medical file will travel alongside them. I will read this to make sure I get it
right. Command centres will be established at Shenton Park and Fiona Stanley
Hospital to coordinate the safe and efficient transfer of those patients. St John's
Ambulance is coordinating all patient transfer vehicles and will liaise closely
with medical teams to decide the best mode of transport for each patient.
Twenty-three vehicles will be used in the transfer, including ambulances,
wheelchair-accessible vehicles and a bus that can carry six wheelchair-bound
patients at one time. They will leave from Shenton Park at eight in the
morning, and that transfer will continue until about mid-afternoon. WA Health
is working with other government departments, such as the WA Police and Main
Roads, to make sure the transfer is coordinated in a way that causes the least
possible disruption to the community while we get everyone across from Shenton
Park to the new Fiona Stanley Hospital.
I take this
opportunity to wish all those patients well, and I hope they and the staff have
a seamless transfer.
