325. Mr R.S. LOVE to the Premier:
I refer to the shocking announcement of 200 mostly
Perth-based Santos employees being sacked, with the reason provided being slow
project approvals.
(1) In light
of the development will the Premier undertake to discuss with the Prime
Minister and his relevant ministers the detrimental effect of the federal
government's lagging approval processes on our state?
(2) Will the Premier concede that Canberra's
Nature Positive plan will further exacerbate the current situation?

I am not sure why the member cares. His party in Canberra is actively opposed
to the production tax credit. He does not
want to see any downstream processing and development in Western Australia. Do not come into this place and pretend you somehow
want to support Western Australian industry. We know what his position
on that is and we know the position of his national leader, which is to unwind
the GST and unwind the production tax credit. That is anti-Western Australian
and anti–Western Australian industry. Do not dare come in here with
your crocodile tears about projects that you now somehow have some sort of
empathy for.
The
fact of the matter is that there is no Santos project in the Environmental Protection
Authority stream of environmental approvals at the moment. From that
perspective, there is no reflection on the Western Australian environmental
approvals process at all in terms of the decision that Santos has made. In
fact, we have already announced that we will be moving forward with green and
red-tape reform to make sure that we get
these sorts of projects coming to Western Australia. The fact is that the job
cuts are part of the decommissioning cycle of Santos's older
assets. Even though Santos may want to make a
statement about the general disagreement it has, particularly with the Barossa
project, so be it, but Santos is not reflecting on the Western Australian'
government's program or on any Western Australian projects.
