I refer the minister to the Water Corporation’s approval from the Water and Rivers Commission for the extraction of ground water in the Perth region for supply in the Perth integrated water supply scheme. (1) What was the licence allocation granted to the Water Corporation for each of the years 2000-01 to 2003-04? (2) Did the Water and Rivers Commission direct or request the Water Corporation to shut down any bores supplying the Perth integrated water supply scheme last year or this year? (3) Did the Water and Rivers Commission request the Water Corporation extraction of any bore fields supplying the PIWSS last year or this year? (4) If yes to questions (2) or (3), will the minister provide details about the reasons for the decrease in the volume of water extracted and identify the bore fields that have been affected? Hon TOM STEPHENS

The Minister for the Environment has provided the following response - (1) 2000-01/145 gigalitres 2001-02/159 gigalitres 2002-03/167 gigalitres 2003-04/Yet to be determined (2) The Water Corporation’s allocation for 2003-04 is yet to be determined. No additional bores were required to be switched off last year. Some bores remain off from previous years to protect significant environmental values at risk from declining ground water levels. (3) No additional bores were required to operate at reduced levels last year. Some bores remain at reduced levels from previous years to protect significant environmental values at risk from the declining ground water levels. (4) The volume of ground water allocated to the Water Corporation increased from 145 gigalitres in 2000-01 to 167 gigalitres in 2002-03. Reductions in ground water drawn from areas of environmental risk have been more than offset by additional water drawn from other areas, including the deeper aquifers.
