FIREARMS — OWNERS — MENTAL HEALTH
ASSESSMENTS
711. Hon JAMES HAYWARD to the minister representing the
Minister for Police:
I refer to plans for compulsory
mental health checks for gun owners.
(1) Has the
minister appointed the members of the working group to investigate how mental
health checks for gun owners could be conducted?
(2) If yes to (1), who are the
individuals who have been appointed?
(3) Is part of
the scope of the working group to investigate how mental health checks for gun
owners would impact the already stretched mental health capacity in WA?
(4) When will the
working group publish a report, and will the minister commit to tabling the
output of the working group in Parliament?

I thank the member for some notice
of the question. The following answer is provided on behalf of the Minister for
Police.
(1)–(4) A
working group comprising the Western Australia Police Force, the Mental Health
Commission, the Royal Australian College of
General Practitioners and other stakeholders has been established to
investigate the most effective process for the health assessments. The
recommendations of this working group will be considered as part of the rewrite
of the Firearms Act 1973.
