JOONDANNA COMMUNITY FOOD GARDEN — GRANT
LAUNCH
892. Mr C.D. HATTON to the
Minister for Local Government:
Firstly, I would like to acknowledge and welcome to the
public gallery the principal, teacher and wonderful students whom I met today
from Balcatta Primary School in the Balcatta electorate.
Today the minister was digging around in my electorate and
probably getting his hands very dirty. Can he please update the house on the
plans to assist community groups to establish or maintain a community garden?

I thank the member for Balcatta for the question. Yes, I was
at the Joondanna Community Food Garden to launch a great campaign for community
garden grants. It was an election commitment of the Liberal Party at the last
state election. It was great to be out there today to acknowledge the great work
of those community members who have community gardens. It is a great place. I
met a couple of kids who were working in the garden with their parents. It is
the whole process of working with families and also with the community. As
Perth grows, backyards are getting smaller, so these community gardens provide
an activity in communities. Also, most importantly, the community gardens
develop the community and get everyone out in their gardens and talking to each
other.
It was great to be in Joondanna this afternoon for the grant
launch. An amount of $100 000 will be provided over four years. Grants of $20 000
are available for a new community garden and grants of $10 000 are available to
expand existing community gardens. It is a great program to help community
gardens. We planted a lime tree today with Nick and the group at the Joondanna
Community Food Garden. Interestingly, as Minister for Seniors and Volunteering,
I know that a number of seniors groups also use the garden. As the population
gets older, it is a great opportunity for people who may be isolated in their
house to get out on a beautiful day and plant some vegetables and interact with
other members of the community. It is important in getting community members
together. They talked about different stuff. They were grinding some dried
herbs to put in jars to sell or to take home. The member's local
community garden is fantastic. It was great to be there. It is great to be part
of a government that recognises and supports community gardens with these grants.
