PREPAID FUNERALS
327. Hon LJILJANNA RAVLICH to
the Minister for Commerce:
I refer to a report on prepaid funerals which has been before
government for quite some time.
(1) What are the recommendations of that report?
(2) When does
the government intend to act on the recommendations and what assurances can the
Minister for Commerce give consumers left unprotected in the meantime?

AnswerView source ↗

I thank the honourable member for some notice of the
question.
(1) The report
recommended that a limited code of practice under the Fair Trading Act 2010 be
introduced to regulate the prepaid funeral sector and to provide certainty as
to the treatment and investment of prepaid consumer funds.
(2) The report
is under consideration. The recommendation of the report was not strongly
supported by the Regulatory Gatekeeping Unit as most pre-paid funeral providers
are Australian Funeral Directors Association members who already abide by a
code of practice that largely addresses the issues recommended by the report and
few complaints are received about the funeral industry.
