The Minister Replied:
(1) Due to operational sensitivities, I am not prepared to provide more specific information relating to staffing levels of individual units. However, the authorised strength for the Commercial Crime Division is 51 sworn FTEs and 5 unsworn FTEs.
(2) Refer to (1) above.
(3) $659,250. This figure is the operational costs for the Division and excludes salary on-costs, which vary because of the operational requirements of the Division.
(4) No statistics are kept on the number of prosecutions initiated on the basis of evidence gathered by the unit.
The area acts primarily in a support role to the entire Western Australia Police Service providing services in the forensic analysis of computers seized by police as well as the investigation of computer related criminal offences. Requirements vary between tasks and so the type of statistics referred to above would not accurately reflect the activities of Computer Crime Investigation.
To date the Unit has received the following forensic analysis and investigation tasks:
Analysis Investigations
1998 42 38
1999 93 59
2000 (to date) 77 36
