CENTENNIAL PARK SPORTING PRECINCT — ALBANY
623. Mr P.B. WATSON to the
Minister for Sport and Recreation:
I refer to the Centennial Park sporting precinct
redevelopment in Albany.
(1) Why has
the $8.75 million that was promised at the last election for this important
sporting infrastructure upgrade in Albany not been delivered?
(2) When will
the government deliver this funding or is it just another broken promise that
the people of Albany have to pay for?

AnswerView source ↗

(1)–(2) The
state government is very proud of the investment we have made in sport and
recreation since we came to government, particularly through the community
sporting and recreation facilities fund. When we came to government, we doubled
the amount of funding that we invested, and as a consequence—as the
member would have seen as he travelled across the state—it is an
absolutely fantastic outcome for community sport and recreation, for the clubs
that participate and for all the people involved.

The
SPEAKER : Members!
Ms M.J. DAVIES : I
want to put on the record that this state government has already made an
investment in Centennial Park. A contribution of $8 million was made that went
towards upgrading a range of facilities such as extending the courts at the
leisure centre, floodlighting and some further master planning. The city has
also been successful in receiving Regional Development Australia funding. One
of the commitments made at the last state election was for further state
government funding, and that funding is under consideration. I am very aware of
the concerns of the city, as the mayor has raised them with me. As I said to
him at a local government forum, we are not yet at the state election and there
is therefore no broken promise. The state government is considering the funding
going forward, and we stand by our commitment that we have made to date on
investment in sport and recreation right across the state.
