(2) Has the DEP considered amending the Environmental Protection Act to deem readings on air monitoring devices to be in accordance with the Australian Standards? Hon PETER FOSS

I thank the member for some notice of this question. (1) The DEP specifies the use of Australian Standards for air monitoring when these are available. The DEP audits the air monitoring system and procedures according to Australian Standard 3580.4.1 for sulfur dioxide on a periodic basis. Other standards apply for the siting and operation of monitoring equipment. The results of monitoring using Australian Standards are then compared with the limits specified in the goldfields environmental protection policy and the sulfur dioxide monitoring regulations. (2) The Government has introduced regulations under the Environmental Protection Act 1986 to deem readings on air monitoring devices used in the goldfields accurate and in accordance with quality assured processes, which can include Australian Standards.
