(1)–(2) Can
I thank the member for Scarborough for the question. It was a phenomenal and
amazing weekend for Western Australia. Western Australians raised a record $62 million
for Telethon this year. That is a brilliant
achievement from 54 years ago, when Western Australians raised $104 000—it
is about a 442 times increase per
year. It beats last year's record of $46.3 million. For the first time,
the money raised by Telethon exceeded not only $50 million, but $60
million.
I acknowledge the work of the
Telethon chair, Mr Richard Goyder, and all the team at Telethon, who did a terrific job, in particular Fat Cat, who I have
spent a bit of time with over the last few days. He is a champ. Despite
all my efforts to get him to talk, he would not. He has turned 50 this year,
yet he constantly says he is seven.
This year's two Telethon
stars were Lucy Antipas and Oliver Lim, who are both very, very special and
beautiful children.
As I announced on Sunday, the state
government has made a record $10 million donation on behalf of all Western Australians
to Telethon. That is a significant increase on last year's contribution
to Telethon. That will go to supporting the vital work of Western Australia's
child health researchers in their quest to undertake new ways to prevent,
diagnose and treat diseases and chronic conditions in children. Of that, $2 million
will go to support the WA Child Research Fund program. That program has funded
18 research projects, including research
into children living with childhood dementia, which is a very difficult
condition for children to endure.
Telethon supports many other great
organisations. Last week, I visited the Healthy Strides Foundation in Carlisle
and met with Dayna and the team there. They are marvellous people, doing a great
job. There are many charities like that across Western Australia, supported by
Telethon.
The great thing about having good
financial management in Western Australia is that we are able to do great
things like this and provide this support to Telethon.
