(1)–(2) I
thank the member for the question. It was an absolute pleasure to be with the
member at Hillarys Primary School recently to mark another great achievement of
my government when it comes to investing in education. I was in this place
yesterday talking about the great record-breaking efforts in Telethon on the
weekend. The event is an important reminder about the purpose of this house, to
set this state up for future generations. It was a pleasure to continue that
theme. As I said, I was with the Minister for Education and the member for
Hillarys on Monday afternoon. We were in the northern suburbs with staff and
students of the freshly rebuilt Hillarys
Primary School, delivering amazing school facilities, I must say. It is one of the best investments that we can make as a government. It is an investment in
the next generation and all that follows in
their lives. In the case of Hillarys Primary School, it was a $22.8 million
investment involved in redeveloping a well-established primary school
called Lymburner Primary School back in 1973, when even the Deputy Speaker was
a young man.
The DEPUTY SPEAKER : Just very
young!
Mr
R.H. COOK : It is a school that
served the community for 50 years. Nearly every building of the school's
campus has been rebuilt. To be frank, I could not identify any part of the
school that was not rebuilt. There is very little reminder of what a great school that has been for
50 years. It was completed over three stages. The project has delivered 16 new learning classrooms, two new kindergarten classrooms
and a new inclusive education classroom. It has also delivered a new
administration building, library, staffroom, hard courts, parking and
landscaping, which was all part of the build. The $22.8 million investment
delivers new classrooms and modern facilities. We want our students to be
learning in great schools that are modern and inspiring. My government has
committed $1.6 billion over the next four years for new and improved
infrastructure for public schools. I know it is a program that those opposite
wholly endorse, because when we looked at the blue catalogue on the
weekend—The Liberal Party's priority plans—the word ''education'' did not
get a mention. I am taking that as a vote of confidence. We know that the
Liberals abandoned training; it looks like it has also abandoned education when
it comes to its aspirations for government.
The number of major projects that we
have completed this year alone includes the redevelopment of John Forrest
Secondary College in Morley; the complete rebuild and redevelopment of
Lesmurdie Primary School; the $15 million upgrade of Mount Lawley Senior High
School; the redevelopment of Derby District High School and the $15 million
redevelopment of Westminster Primary School. There is plenty scheduled to be
completed by the end of the year. Looking ahead, a further 74 major public
school projects are fully funded. Each is being planned or built across this
great state. Combined with evolving TAFE and training systems, we are setting
our kids up for the future. We are setting our economy up for the future and we
are committed to providing quality infrastructure for local schools, and giving
Western Australian students the best possible learning experience.
We will not be standing in the way
of any new schools or drumming up scare campaigns about land acquisitions,
because everyone here should know that our job is to set up the state for the
future.
