(a-b) The Department of Finance has not awarded a contract to Smith Constructions for the installation of school playground equipment in any government school.
An initial contract was awarded to Smith Constructions on 24 December 2010 for the installation of shade structures to 82 government schools which are also to receive playground equipment to be installed by other contractors.
A further 30 schools were added to the initial contract bringing the total number of schools to 112 for the Smith Constructions contract.
Of the 112 schools to receive shade structures under the Smith Constructions contract, playground equipment has been installed at 70 schools, with installation of play equipment at the remaining 42 schools expected to be completed by the end of September 2012.
It is worth noting that installation of shade structures and the new playground equipment is additional work that has been funded from savings achieved under the Building the Education Revolution program which in Western Australia was largely completed on time and on budget by the Department of Finance's Building Management and Works.
(c) There is a rolling program of works to install shade structures at the 112 schools and each site has a different commencement and completion date. Refer to attachment A.
(d)  The total estimated value of the Smith Constructions contract is around $9.3 million, which includes the variation for the additional 30 schools and additional site works required at many of the 112 schools.
