When will the Deaf Society of Western Australia receive recurrent funding to provide vital interpreting and advocacy services to the Deaf Society in line with services provided to non-English speaking people in Australia? Hon LJILJANNA RAVLICH

AnswerView source ↗

I thank the member for some notice of this question. In 2001-02 the State Government will provide some $96 000 in recurrent funding to the Deaf Society of Western Australia for the coordination of its interpreting services. It also provided non-recurrent contract funds of $35 000 for the sole purpose of developing a business plan to assist the agency to generate new revenue sources of funding for this vital service. The Disability Services Commission has received the first quarterly progress report of this project, which indicates that future income generation may reach some $75 000 a year. Direct operational savings are also expected. The Commonwealth Government also has a role to play in funding advocacy services to people with disabilities. The minister is committed to pursuing this issue with the Commonwealth to achieve fairer funding arrangements for the disability sector.
