CORONAVIRUS — INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS
379. Mrs A.K. HAYDEN to the Premier:
I refer to the article in The Australian of today
entitled, ''Queensland and WA universities likely to miss out on
international students''. Can the Premier confirm that his government is
only one of two state governments refusing to take a plan for international
students to national cabinet; and can the Premier confirm that this could
significantly undermine the economic recovery of Western Australia's international
education sector?

I saw the story this morning on my clipping service. As I recall,
the story indicated that some states are looking to engage in a trial of
international students coming in. From my memory of the story, they are New
South Wales, Victoria and South Australia. That would mean that Tasmania,
Queensland, the Northern Territory, the Australian Capital Territory and Western
Australia are not part of the trial. We have not made any decisions about this
matter, but all I say is that I would be very wary at this time about
international travel into Western Australia due to the prospect of the
introduction of COVID-19. Clearly, we accept Australians coming home and we
have quarantine arrangements for them, but at this time I think it is too early
for us to commit to any such trial.
