The new Department for Community Development, with its goals of improving the coordination of whole of Government and intersector policy, planning, development and review; and engaging Western Australians, especially service providers, in the business of Government will support this government's focus on women and women's interests. To review and recommend a portfolio policy framework that ensures an appropriate focus on the status of all women consistant with the Labor Government's election commitments for Western Australia, the Minister for Women's Interests convened a Reference Group in June 2001. The Reference Group of skilled and informed individuals was asked to review existing consultative mechanisms and recommend a consultative structure that will ensure that the voices and needs of Western Australian women are heard. The Reference Group was also asked to advise on strategies to engage all components of the community to work in genuine partnership with Government to improve opportunities and outcomes for women. The Group provided a report to the Minister on 12 September 2001 and the Minister is currently considering its recommendations.
