The Department of Commerce advises:
(1) The COAG reforms will have a significant impact on Energy
Safety
occupational licensing in the 2010/11 financial year. With electrical and gas licences being chosen as part of the first group for the national licensing system it will require a national database and an IT system to cope with the change.
Considerable work is still needed on the funding questions to make sure Western Australia does not experience a net revenue loss while maintaining an effective regulatory oversight of the electricity and gas fitting industries.
A potential conflict exists in the area of plumbing and gas fitting. Some jurisdictions believe gas fitting should be part of a plumbing licence. Western Australia believes it is a separate licence so that those who choose can be gasfitters without becoming plumbers.
