I refer to my question of 1 May and the minister’s response on that day regarding the indicative level of sustainable yield. (1) Will the Government release publicly a range of indicative figures for the long-term sustainable yield of first and second-grade jarrah and karri sawlogs during this month? If not, why not? (2) Will the Government release with each figure a statement of the assumptions underlying that figure; for example, rotation, length, habitat retention and management priorities? If not, why not? (3) Will the Government seek an independent review of these figures and the assumptions on which they are based prior to their release? If not, why not? Hon KIM CHANCE

The first part of the member’s question varies from my copy of it. The words “during this month” have been added, which I do not think vastly alters the answer. In the second part of the question reference is made to habitat, which does not appear in my answer. I am, nonetheless, happy to provide the answer noting the absence of that reference. (1)-(3) The Government will release a range of indicative figures for the sustained yield in the coming weeks along with the assumptions on which they are based. We are planning to do it this month. The methodology to calculate the yield is already subject to review by an independent expert committee chaired by Professor Ferguson. Final yield figures included in the future draft forest management plan and final forest management plan will also be subject to review by this group and, as I understand it, the Environmental Protection Authority.
