HOME OWNERSHIP
I acknowledge in the public gallery the staff and students of Sevenoaks Senior College. Can the minister advise the house how the Carpenter government is helping more Western Australians to own their own home? Mrs M.H. ROBERTS

AnswerView source ↗

I thank the member for Victoria Park for the question. Ms S.E. Walker interjected. The SPEAKER : Order, member! Mrs M.H. ROBERTS : I advise the house that - Ms S.E. Walker interjected. The SPEAKER : I call the member for Nedlands to order for the second time. Mrs M.H. ROBERTS : I was delighted to go to Queens Park in the electorate of the member for Victoria Park today with him to welcome some of the newest home owners in Western Australia. We have sold the first of the refurbished homes in the Quattro development in Queens Park, which some people would know as Maniana. It is a 23-hectare site and some 200 properties have already been demolished and 278 new single-residential sites and six group-dwelling sites are being developed. Many of those sites will be sold to the general public. This morning the young couple who bought the first house paid $255 000 for the home. That reflects our government’s commitment not only to refurbishing and renovating the older suburbs, but also to making sure that there is affordable housing product for people wanting to pursue the dream of owning their own home. With our booming economy, the median price for a home in the metropolitan area is $353 000. The New Living program is making a significant contribution towards providing affordable housing not just in the metropolitan area, but also in country areas. New Living projects are under way in metropolitan suburbs, including at Bentley, Coolbellup, Midland, Midvale, Swan View, Koongamia, Koondoola, Hamilton Hill and Queens Park. In country areas, the New Living program is certainly making a significant contribution in the towns of Albany, Bunbury, Kalgoorlie, Geraldton, Carnarvon and South Hedland. In the period from July 2001 to June 2006, under the New Living program, some 847 vacant lots have been sold at affordable prices and almost 2 000 Homeswest homes have been refurbished. Unlike those people who sit opposite who are busy tearing each other down, the government is interested in building this state and our economy and helping more young Western Australians realise the dream of owning their own home.
