ISOLATED CHILDREN SCHEME, FEDERAL ASSISTANCE 1037. Hon BARBARA SCOTT to the parliamentary secretary representing the Minister for Education: (1) How many Western Australian students access the federal assistance for isolated children scheme allowances which assist with the cost of living away from home? (2) Will the minister name the bypass schools in Western Australia? Hon GRAHAM GIFFARD

AnswerView source ↗

I thank the member for some notice of this question. (1) Information and statistics related to the federal Government’s assistance for isolated children scheme is not available to the Department of Education and would need to be provided by Centrelink. The Western Australian Government makes available a boarding away from home allowance to families with children attending primary and/or secondary schools. Recipients of the federal assistance for isolated children scheme are also eligible to apply to the Department of Education for the state boarding away from home allowance. As a guide, there were 1 900 payments for the boarding away from home allowance in 2000. Payments are made retrospectively and applications for 2001 close on 28 February 2002. (2) I table a list of bypass schools in Western Australia. [See paper No 1234.]
