AGRICULTURE —
DECLARED WEEDS
80. Hon JAMES HAYWARD to the Minister for Agriculture and Food:
I refer to the management of
declared weeds in Western Australia.
(1) How many individuals have been fined for not
managing weeds on their property in the 2022 calendar year?
(2) In how many
cases has the department of agriculture intervened to manage declared weeds on
freehold land in the 2022 calendar year?
(3) How many
reports of declared weeds on government-controlled land were received in 2022?
(4) Is the minister confident that declared weeds are
being managed appropriately on all government-controlled land?

I thank the honourable member for
some notice of the question.
(1) None.
(2) The member referred to the department of
agriculture in question (2). I assume that he meant the Department of
Primary Industries and Regional Development. If that is correct and the member
is not referring to the federal department of agriculture, the answer is that
the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development has intervened on
three occasions.
(3) It is not
possible to provide the level of detail required in the time frame provided.
The member may wish to put this part of the question on notice.
(4) DPIRD's focus is on declared category 1
species, which are prohibited in WA, and category 2 species, which have been identified for eradication or broad
containment in WA. In the 2022 calendar year, 14 parcels of government-controlled lands were inspected in
relation to category 1 and category 2 species. Many declared weeds in WA are category 3, classed as being
widespread and established in WA. DPIRD does not actively monitor or
manage the presence of category 3 declared weeds on any property.
