LEADLIGHT BUSINESS, NORTHBRIDGE —
EVICTION
312. Mr J.N. HYDE to the Minister for Planning:
On behalf of the member for Albany, I acknowledge the
presence in the gallery of the Great Southern Grammar students.
I refer to the government's decision to evict
81-year-old leadlight maker Bob Mainstone with only one month's notice after 30 years of tenancy in
Northbridge. Mr Mainstone is in the Speaker's gallery today with his
wife and leadlight maker partner Supan. His stained glasswork includes the
Speaker's mace above the doorway to this chamber.
(1) Given that
nearby government-owned shops have been empty for the minister's whole
term of government, can he guarantee that Bob's callous eviction will
lead to genuine redevelopment and more craftsmen moving in quickly?
(2) Does the
minister understand that original Perth people such as Bob give our city some
soul, or is the minister's government concerned only with a slap of
paint and its next media opportunity?
(3) How many
other seniors in business does the minister's government plan to evict?

(1)–(3) The
question that has been asked by the member for Perth is about a fairly detailed
issue. He has given no notice of it. If he wanted a comprehensive answer, some
notice would have been desirable. I remember being provided with a briefing
note on this issue about a week and a half or so ago. My recollection is that
discussions have been held with the tenant. There have been some concerns
about, as I recall, how the property has been used. I am sure that —
Mr J.N. Hyde interjected.
Mr J.H.D. DAY : Did
the member say Mr Maiden?
Mr J.N. Hyde :
Sorry?
Mr J.H.D. DAY : Is
the name of the tenant Mr Maiden?
Mr J.N. Hyde : Mr
Mainstone.
Mr J.H.D. DAY : I
am sure the work that he has undertaken there in leadlighting has been
excellent and of a very high standard, but this is not an issue in which I have
had any direct involvement. The upgrade of the buildings along William Street
has been undertaken by the former East Perth Redevelopment Authority; it is now
under the responsibility of the Metropolitan Redevelopment Authority. An
excellent job has been undertaken, I must say, by EPRA and now by the MRA in
substantially upgrading the properties and the precinct. That has led to a very
substantial improvement in the amenity of the area. My understanding is that
the tenants in most cases have been either identified, if they have not moved
in as yet, or are being identified. I will seek further information. My
recollection is that there have been quite extensive discussions between Mr Mainstone
and the Metropolitan Redevelopment Authority as it is.
