Fuel support payment
323. Mrs Lisa Munday to
the Premier:
I refer to the Cook
Labor government's commitment to delivering targeted cost-of-living relief to
Western Australians.
(1) Can the Premier please outline to the
house how the Cook Labor government is supporting Western Australian households
and families through the upcoming fuel support payment?
(2) Can the Premier also please update
the house on options available to Western Australians claiming the payment
through the ServiceWA app?

(1)–(2) I thank the member for the question. As
the member knows, as do a lot of regional Western Australians, the cost of
filling the tank in the car is more expensive nowadays, and that is because
they spend more time on the road. Filling up the tank not once, but two or
three times, a week can be expensive, and global pressures are pushing up
prices at the moment. We know that fuel costs are biting hard for families,
tradies and small businesses. That is exactly why my government is delivering
real, targeted cost-of-living relief.
From 1 July, around 2.3 million
Western Australians will be able to claim the $100 fuel support payment. It is relief
that people will feel as they pull up to the bowser. It is simple and practical,
and it will help with the cost that people cannot avoid. We know that it is
incredibly popular and is warmly welcomed by the community. Many people in the
community are saying to us that they are really pleased that we have made this
offer for cost-of-living relief around fuel, but they potentially do not need
it but know people who do. That is what really sets this initiative apart. It
allows Western Australians to do what they know how to do best, and that is be
true West Aussies. It is not just about looking after ourselves; it is about
looking after each other. That is why, through the ServiceWA app, people will
have a choice. They can either keep the $100 or pass it on to someone who needs
it more. We will make it possible for Western Australians to donate their
payment to any of 15 trusted charities delivering food and emergency relief, children's
services and community services. It will provide real help.
Several members
interjected.
The Speaker: Sorry, Premier. Treasurer and Leader of
the Opposition, please do not have cross-chamber conversations while the
Premier is responding to the question.
Mr Roger Cook: It will provide real help, it will have
a real impact and it will be felt by all those who need it most. This is part
of $1 billion in cost-of-living relief delivered through the state budget,
because whether people are driving between towns or across the suburbs or are just
trying to make ends meet, WA Labor has their back. We will always do what
is right for WA.
