PUBLIC HOUSING — WAITLIST
8. Hon Dr BRAD PETTITT to the minister representing the
Minister for Housing:
I refer to the wait-turn and
priority public housing waitlist.
(1) How many
applicants and individuals were on each list at the end of November 2023,
December 2023 and January 2024 respectively?
(2) On what date
did the applicant who has been waiting the longest on each waitlist initially
join the waitlist?

I thank the honourable member for
some notice of the question. The following response has been provided by the
Minister for Housing.
(1) Rental
vacancy rates have tightened across the country during the COVID-19 pandemic,
significantly impacting the housing market in every jurisdiction. A tight private
rental market will reflect an increase in the number of applications for social
housing. Many people who may be otherwise housed may seek the safety net of
public housing when there is significant pressure in the private rental market.
As of 30 November 2023, there were 19
391 applications on the public housing waitlist statewide, representing 34 505
people. This included 5 014 priority applications, representing 9 829 people.
As of 31 December 2023, there were 19
574 applications on the public housing waitlist statewide, representing 34 884
people. This includes 5 072 priority applications, representing 9 912 people.
As of 31 January 2024, there were 19 734
applications on the public housing waitlist statewide, representing 35 261
people. This includes 5 066 priority applications, representing 9 912 people.
(2) The requested
information is not regularly reported on and would require a manual review of
individual files. This information is not able to be gathered without an
unreasonable use of government resources and is therefore unable to be
provided.
