SCHOOLS —
FUNDING
528. Mr M. McGOWAN to the
Premier:
I have a supplementary question. How does it help high
schools struggling to retain students, particularly in disadvantaged areas, to
have major cuts made to their budgets? Can the Premier explain how those
funding cuts help those schools?

AnswerView source ↗

I think I just made the point that there is a redistribution
of overall funding towards primary schools and therefore some schools will lose
money, principally some of the high schools that under the student-based
funding model are, in a sense, staffed above what they would get.
Several members interjected.
The SPEAKER :
Member for Armadale, I call you to order for the first time.
Mr C.J. BARNETT :
This government has an outstanding record on education reform and funding. Look
at the figures since this government came into power: there has been a massive
increase in education funding. I find it interesting that someone interjected
about Shenton College, which is in my electorate and is a great school.
Mr R.H. Cook interjected.
The SPEAKER :
Member for Kwinana, I call you to order for the first time.
Mr C.J. BARNETT :
This government is modernising our education system, and the job to be done is
in secondary education. That is why the Minister for Education and I went to
Fremantle, where there is dissatisfaction about the standard of secondary
education. Reform and capital expenditure will come about. In the next few
weeks, the Minister for Education and I will host a forum in the Armadale district.
Again, that is somewhere where secondary education is not at the standard that
it should be. They are not natural Liberal Party areas. What did the Labor
Party do in Fremantle or in Armadale when it was in government? Nothing!
